October 1, 2012 Subject:
Nervous Breakdown (The Life of Riley).
Season 1, episode 5.
Original air date: 1 November 1949.
Peg becomes angry when she hears Riley has bought a divers herlmet to go with a colony of bees he has also purchased.
Cast: John Brown (Digby `Digger` O`Dell), Rosemary DeCamp (Peg Riley), Jackie Gleason (Chester A. Riley), Wilton Graff (Dr. Leroy), Bob Jellison (Waldo Binnie), Lanny Rees (Junior Riley), Sid Tomack (Jim Gillis) and Gloria Winters (Babs Riley).
OK, this is what to expect: The picture quality is bad, the show is good and it is unclear whether this is an edited copy, since it runs for 22 minutes (for the record, with some noted exceptions, early TV tended to have less minutes of advertising than current US network TV. There are exceptions, obviously, but it's hard to say; A lot of these old shows were edited for syndication)
OK, so Riley thinks his wife is having a Nervous Breakdown. Riley's wife thinks Riley is having a Nervous Breakdown. I cannot spell Nervous Breakdown, so I'm using copy and paste (with the Under_score removed).
The cast is good, script is decent, etc.
But is it just me, or does this show feature a canned audience appluase but no canned laugh-track? WTF?
I wonder if Riley ever got around to being a beekeeper....
